Book Arts focuses on creating and shaping physical books—the way text is set and printed (typography), the handmade materials and papers used (hand papermaking), and the craft of putting pages together and covering them (bookbinding). Data mining, on the other hand, is about uncovering patterns in large datasets using algorithms and statistics, which belongs to data science rather than book making. So it isn’t part of the hands-on practices and materials that define Book Arts. The other options are integral components of the field: typography guides the appearance of text, hand papermaking provides traditional materials, and bookbinding completes the book as a physical object.
