College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS) Ambassadors Practice Test

The main idea tested is that earning a PhD in this field centers on developing the ability to conduct independent research that adds new knowledge. A PhD student designs and carries out studies, analyzes data, and interprets findings to contribute original insights to the discipline, typically culminating in a dissertation and dissemination of results through publications and presentations. This distinguishes a PhD from a professional teaching certificate, which prepares someone for teaching rather than producing new research. It also contrasts with a non-research based degree, since the hallmark of a PhD is the creation of new knowledge through rigorous inquiry. While PhDs can lead to various career paths, including academia and research roles, the defining outcome is demonstrated capacity to conduct independent research and advance the field.
